Here is an update on the recent happenings and developments in the department:
NEW DEVELOPMENTS:
- The UGC has announced a grant of Rs. 30.0 crore to Jadavpur University for teaching and research in mobile commuting and communications.
- A new digital EPABX (1000 ports) with the provision of P&T extension plus voice guidance facility has been installed and inaugurated on 19th September, 2001.
- The Department of E&TCE, Jadavpur University has successfully organized a two day national level conference on Computer Networking and Multimedia (COMNAM-2000) during 21-22 December, 2000 at the JU campus. The conference programme consisted of invited talks, tutorial lectures and contributed papers.
- Prof. A.K. Das developed a prototype optical instrument for thickness, displacement and surface roughness measurement
- Dr. A. Kar developed a fibre optic half-duplex communication link for local area computer network
- Dr. A. Kar developed an indigenous technique for high precision temperature tuning of wavelength of semiconductor laser
- Prof. H. Saha and his group developed a microcontroller based net energy ampere hour meter for solar home lighting system
- Prof. H. Saha and his group filed an Indian Patent on Centralized Charging System for Solar PV Lanterns
- Dr. I. Saha-Misra and Mr. M.K. Naskar developed a training toolkit for learning the operation of Automatic Telephone Exchange in U.G. Lab
- A special training programme for the development of Digital Telephone Exchange with ISDN feature is in progress Prof. R. Nandi, Dr. S.K. Sanyal, Mr. K.K. Mallik, Dr. I. Saha-Misra and Mr. M.K. Naskar
ACHIEVEMENTS IN 1999-2001:
- Dr. Santanu Das, President, Trans Switch Ltd., USA (1965 batch, ETCE) received the best entrepeneur prize in the Biswa Banga Sammelan, Calcutta, 2000
- Sri Saibal Mukhopadhyay and Rajarshi Mukherjee (1999 batch, ETCE) received the first prize in paper contest in Unnayan Technofest organised by IEEE student branch, BIT Ranchi in 1999.]
- The University networking system had been developed recently in which the contribution of Sri K.K. Mallik, a teacher of the ETCE department had been quite remarkable.
- The ETCE department is developing Manpower Training Lab in VLSI design sponsored by DOE
- Prof. R. Nandi and Prof. A.K. Das received the IEEE Millenium Award from IEEE-HQ (USA)
- Mr. Tushar Kanti Ghosh, a 1995 batch M.E. student of the Department, has been selected as a recipint of an IEEE Electron Devices Society Graduate Student Fellowship for 2001.
BOOKS AUTHORED BY THE FACULTY:
- Dr. Subir K. Sarkar published a textbook entitled 'Operational Amplifiers and their Applications' in January 1999
- Dr. Subir K. Sarkar published a textbook entitled 'Optical Fibre & Fibre-Optic Communication System' in January 2001
- Dr. A. Konar published a book on 'Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing' in 1999
CHAPTERS OF PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES IN ETCE:
- The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), London opened its Students' Chapter in this department in 1999. This chapter currently runs under the aegis of Mr S.R. Chaki (Representative of the Asian Region) with Sri. Ayan Chaudhuri (Final Year, ETCE) as Chairman and Dr. D.R. Poddar as Advising Professor
- The department enthusiastically activates a students' branch of the IEEE. There are many annual programmes eg. students' paper contests, quiz contests, etc by the Student Branch. There is a 50% rebate in the basic annual student membership fee for IEEE Students' Branch admission. The department takes active interest in the operation of the IEEE Calcutta section.
